Meet: Frankincense - The King of Oils

Meet: Frankincense - The King of Oils

Essential oils have become increasingly popular in recent years as many of us have begun looking for natural ways to enhance our health. As many of us are finding out, these age-old classics have been used throughout history for good reason… they work! It seems that when it comes to most common ailments, it’s safe to say, “there’s an oil for that!”. The popularity of oils like peppermint, lavender, and tea tree oil is unmistakable with people keeping these on hand for everything from headaches to bug bites to promoting a restful night’s sleep. However, there is one essential oil that has often been overlooked but is making a comeback. This oil is one that is so amazing it has been used for millennia, deemed “The King of Oils,” and is even mentioned in the Bible as one of the gifts given to Jesus at His birth! Yep, we’re talking about frankincense!

For many of us, our familiarity with frankincense begins and ends with the knowledge that it was one of the 3 gifts given to Jesus by the wise men, along with gold and myrrh. This fact alone should give us a major clue about just how valuable frankincense is. In those days, it was considered to be every bit as valuable as gold thanks its medicinal benefits. It was one of the most valued commodities in ancient times making it a fitting “gift for a King”. With all of these kingly references and a recent rejuvenated interest in frankincense, we thought it would be fun to dive in and tell you a little bit more about this legendary oil and exactly why it is so beloved!

Frankincense Origins

Frankincense is also known as “olibanum” and comes from the hardened sap (resin) of the Boswellia family of trees which is native to areas of Africa, India, and the Middle East. Boswellia trees have extremely thin bark which seep out resin when shallow cuts are made in the bark. The resin is then extracted from the tree and steamed in order to make the essential oil.

Boswellia Tree

There are several different types of Frankincense including some of the most popular:

  • Boswellia Frereana – Generally comes from the Middle East
  • Boswellia Carterii – Generally comes from Somiland in Africa
  • Boswellia Sacra/Serrata – Generally comes from India

The chemical compositions of each of these is slightly different, however our favorite, Boswellia Carterii contains 3 powerful chemical constituents:

  • α-Pinene
  • α-Thujene
  • Limonene

Frankincense has been known to have wide-ranging benefits for everything from hair and skin care to stress relief and other health benefits. Many people keep it on them at all times thanks to its extreme versatility. While frankincense is great on its own, it is also known as a great “messenger oil,” helping to increase the effectiveness of other essential oils when used in tandem with them. In fact, there’s a popular phrase that exists in the essential oil world that says “When in doubt, use frankincense”. With so much “buzz” around this oil, let’s take a look at some of the fabulous benefits of frankincense!

Frankincense Benefits

Frankincense essential oil is thought to have a wide variety of therapeutic properties that are the result of the incredible chemical components that make up the oil including limonene and alpha pinene. Limonene is known for helping to uplift mood and energize while pinene is known as an excellent anti-inflammatory, making it wonderful for use on the skin. Thanks to the incredible chemical makeup of frankincense oil, it has benefits for everything from skin care to aromatherapy and more!

8 Surprising Reasons Why Peppermint Is a Powerhouse Essential Oil That Everyone Should Have!

8 Surprising Reasons Why Peppermint Is a Powerhouse Essential Oil That Everyone Should Have!

In the world of essential oils, there are a plethora of options to choose from. Each oil has its own set of unique uses and benefits, but one of the most popular, versatile, and best smelling oils around is the classic Peppermint Oil. This familiar oil is one of the most popular on the market and, for many, it is actually the very first oil they ever purchase. So what makes it so popular? No doubt the incredible scent plays a part, as well as the holiday nostalgia that this oil can induce, but it is so much more than that!

Peppermint oil has actually been used for centuries. Some believe that it was used by the ancient Egyptians for medicinal purposes, but we can be certain that it began to gain traction during the 18th century in England. Peppermint belongs to the mint family and peppermint oil is the naturally occurring hybrid of water, mint and spearmint. It is known to have anti-microbial properties and its most active components are Menthol and Menthone. You may be familiar with Menthol as it is a common ingredient in many cough drops, expectorant rubs, and muscle rubs. It is known for its analgesic, pain-reducing properties. Menthone also has analgesic properties in addition to having antiseptic properties. These two components together are also famous for providing energizing and invigorating effects! You could say these are the keys to why peppermint oil is so versatile and has such a wide range of uses. We’ve made a list of 9 of our favorite uses of this powerhouse oil!

  1. Ease Muscle Aches & Pains – Thanks to the analgesic properties of the menthol contained in peppermint oil, this is a fantastic natural remedy for helping to ease aching muscles. There are a myriad of ways to apply peppermint oil to aching muscles. Try adding a few drops to a warm bath or massage oil to get some natural relief! We also recommend giving our Peppofoot Stick a try! This soothing foot balm is incredible for relieving fatigued, tired foot muscles! It could even be used elsewhere as a muscle rub!

  1. Relieve Headaches – Peppermint oil is widely known for its ability to help ease headaches. We can again thank the menthol content which can help to ease the pain of headaches. Try using our Peppermint Roll-On for a portable way to have quick, easy to apply peppermint oil any time you feel a headache coming on! Check out some of these amazing reviews from our customers who have found that the headache relief from our Peppermint Roll-On can’t be beat!

  • “My go-to for headache relief!” – Dana M.

  • “This stuff always helps me when I have a headache. I have recommended it to so many people who say it also works for them.” – Robin T.

  • “AHHHMAZING!!! I've suffered from crippling migraines for over 40 yrs. I saw this product while I was at Epcot on 01/11/18 & decided to try it. I had a migraine when I woke up today and used this oil on my forehead, temples & tip of my nose. Not only did it get rid of the migraine, it did so in record time. I've tried other natural oil products as well as countless over the counter & prescription meds and none of them have ever done what this oil did. I'm beyond ecstatic with this product. I also purchased the pomegranate lip balm and that's also amazing.” – Kris

  • “I suffer from bad migraines and am prone to getting them at work. I keep this in my pocket and roll some on my temples and it helps relieve the pain! Definitely love this product!!” – Gillian R.

  1. Encourage Scalp & Hair Health – We all know what a struggle it can be to maintain a healthy scalp and healthy hair, especially if you are trying to do so naturally. Peppermint oil is known to help stimulate the scalp and has even been shown to help reduce dandruff. Some have reported that peppermint oil has even helped with hair growth, balancing oils, and increasing hair thickness. Just be sure not to overdo it. It is recommended to use peppermint oil no more than 3 times per week in your hair care routine. Try adding a few drops of peppermint oil to another carrier oil and massaging it on your scalp, or try making a DIY mask with coconut oil and peppermint oil!

  1. Increase Energy – The fresh, minty scent of peppermint oil is one of the most invigorating and energizing scents around! In fact, a study completed in 2013 found that peppermint oil is effective at preventing fatigue and even improving exercise performance! We totally recommend reaching for the peppermint oil when you need a quick boost of energy. One of our favorite ways to reap the energizing benefits is to simply use peppermint oil in a diffuser and then breathe in the invigorating peppermint air! Use our pure peppermint essential oil drops in your diffuser to see the benefits yourself! Another favorite method is using our Peppermint Shower Bomb to really create an energizing, spa-like experience!

  1. Reduce Itchiness – No one enjoys having itchy skin. It’s a super common issue that can be caused for a wide variety of reasons including bug bites, hives, and poison ivy. When you’re dealing with any of these, you know that getting relief is at the top of the priority list! Insects have a strong dislike for peppermint oil, meaning it is your new secret weapon for keeping creepy crawly bugs at bay in a safe and natural way! There are several ways to tackle de-bugging your home. Try putting some Peppermint Essential Oil on a cotton ball and then placing that in areas where you are prone to have bugs. You can also try mixing up your own spray by combining water with a few drops of peppermint oil in a spray bottle.

  1. Relieve Stomach Issues – Stomach issues. We’ve all been there, and we all know how miserable it can be! When you are dealing with stomach issues such as gas and indigestion, relief literally cannot come soon enough! Thankfully, peppermint oil is known as a natural remedy that may have calming effects on the gastrointestinal tract. It essentially helps to calm the muscles of the stomach, which in turn helps everything to function more effectively and can help relieve these uncomfortable issues! 13 Incredible Benefits of Tea Tree Oil

13 Incredible Benefits of Tea Tree Oil

Here at Rinse, we are obviously big fans of natural products, especially Essential Oils. It would be impossible to pick a favorite, but one that definitely ranks towards the top of our list is Tea Tree Oil! Sometimes it feels like Tea Tree Oil doesn’t quite get the attention it deserves. It may not be as flashy and well known as Peppermint Oil or Lavender Oil, but it sure has some knock-out benefits that we’re certain you will love!

Tea Tree Oil is derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia (yeah, we can’t pronounce it either!), commonly known as the Tea Tree! This unique tree is native to Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland. The oil is obtained through a process of steam distilling the leaves to extract the oil. Tea Tree Oil has been used for centuries. The Aboriginal people of Australia discovered the benefits of the oil first. They would crush the leaves to extract the oil which they would use to treat a wide variety of ailments including cuts, burns, and skin infections. They would even bathe in lagoons that were under Tea Trees. The leaves would fall into the waters which would essentially create natural antiseptic baths. The benefits of the Tea Tree quickly became known throughout Australia and physicians began using the oil to sterilize wounds after surgery. Tea Tree Oil was even issued to Australian soldiers during WWII for the treatment of wounds, infections, and more. It wasn’t until more recent history that the “secret” of Tea Tree Oil made it’s way around the world. It has since been widely studied and has become extremely popular among those looking for natural remedies to common ailments and those looking for natural additions to their beauty routines!

So what makes Tea Tree Oil so unique? This powerful, purifying oil has natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. In fact, it is the only oil that actually has an effect on bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. It’s basically an oil straight out of mother natures medicine closet! It has become a popular ingredient in many beauty and skincare products. It can be found in skin creams, massage oils, hair products, and more. Because this oil is so potent, it is not recommended to apply it topically to skin without a carrier oil. Also, it should be noted that despite it’s name including the word “tea,” this oil should never be swallowed!

The uses for Tea Tree Oil are nearly endless. We’ve listed out some of the most common uses below!

  • Hair & Scalp Health – Tea Tree is excellent for helping with a dry scalp or dry hair. Improper cleaning of hair follicles on the scalp can lead to clogged pores which can lead to dandruff or even hair loss. Tea Tree Oil can help to cleanse the scalp, helping to reduce dandruff. It also can make hair follicles more receptive to nutrition which can help to generally support healthy hair. Adding a few drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil to your shampoo can be a real game changer!

    • Psoriasis – Many people who suffer from this autoimmune skin condition have reported that they find relief from using Tea Tree Oil. Many find that it is soothing when applied to the bothersome, scaly patches caused by psoriasis.

    • Athletes Foot – If you’ve ever dealt with Athlete’s Foot, you know that this common foot infection can wreak some serious havoc on your feet leaving them feeling scaly, itching, or even painful. Tea Tree Oil can be used as an effective home remedy. Using it with a carrier such as coconut oil may help to treat both the cause (fungus) and the symptoms of this condition. Check out our Tea Tree Mint Loofah Soap which can help to cleanse rough foot skin, as well as our Tea Tree Soaking Salts to give your feet a refreshing, cleansing soak!

      • Burns – While no one ever plans to get burned, it’s unfortunately a reality of life that it happens from time to time! When you are dealing with a burn to your skin, Tea Tree Oil can be an effective home remedy to help provide some much needed relief. It’s antiseptic and antimicrobial properties can help to keep the burned skin clean, while also helping to accelerate the healing which may in turn help reduce the appearance of scars.
      • Bug Bites – Yet another unavoidable reality of life, especially during the Summer! If you are sugary sweet and tend to get eaten up by biting bugs, this oil is for you! It can be very helpful for alleviating bug bite pain and reducing inflammation caused by it. Check out our Tea Tree Oil Roll-On for a pre-made, ready-to-apply, convenient option for spot treating those pesky bug bites!

      • Aromatherapy – Tea Tree Oil can be added to a diffuser for a purifying, calming environment. This is great for times when you want to let your brain and body get a little rest and relaxation!

      • Expectorant – Australian Aboriginal people have long used a method of crushing Tea Tree leaves and inhaling the oil to help alleviate coughs and colds. It is a little easier to access these days, but the effectiveness of Tea Tree Oils as an expectorant has not changed! Diffusing the oil in combination with using it in a massage oil can help to act as an expectorant, providing relief from coughs, colds, and congestion.

      • Cleaning – As many of us are looking to move from traditional (potentially toxic) cleaning products to more natural and safe solutions, we should definitely consider using Tea Tree Oil in our natural cleaning product lineup! Making a home made cleaner is super simple and can be done by adding about 10 drops of the oil to 2 cups of hot water and ½ cup of vinegar! This DIY all purpose cleaner solution can safely and naturally help to disinfect surfaces in your home. Just be sure to steer clear of using it on any granite surfaces!

While our list of uses for Tea Tree Oil could go on for what feels like forever, we think you kind of get the point… this stuff is awesome! Hopefully this list has helped to educate you on how powerful and versatile this oil really is. If you’re ready to give it a try, we’ve got quite a few products that might be just what you’re looking for!

10 Reasons We LOVE Thievery Roll-On + A Historical Fun Fact You Never Knew!

10 Reasons We LOVE Thievery Roll-On + A Historical Fun Fact You Never Knew!

We believe there are two kinds of people in this world... Those who love Thievery Essential Oil and those who haven't tried it yet! If you are in the second bucket and looking to learn more about thievery oil, you're in the right place! Here at Rinse, we are HUGE fans of Thievery and we can't wait to introduce you to it! Meet one of our favorite essential oil roll-ons:

      Thievery Roll-On

What kind of name is that?… Well, let me tell you a little about thievery oil history (you know it's gonna be good with a name like "thievery"!

As folklore has it... Back in the day, we’re talking waaaaay back in the 15th Century Bubonic Plague day (that's circa 1413 in case were wondering), the story goes there was a group of European thieves (four thieves to be exact) who robbed plague victims & their graves, but they never got the plague. Pretty incredible when you consider that the Bubonic Plague was so highly contagious that it was also know as "the Black Death"... Yikes! Once the thieves were finally apprehended, they were given a choice to either give up their secrets to staying healthy, or perish. As you might imagine, they chose to give up the secrets! As it turns out, they ended up being spice merchants by trade. The trade business had come to a halt due to the closure of the sea ports thanks to the plague, so they turned to looting plague victims & their graves as a way of making money. They had deep herbal knowledge as a result of their trade and they revealed that they used a highly effective blend of oils & herbs to protect them. Their secret recipe included Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, & Lemon. Legend has it that they applied the oils to their hands, feet, temples, ears and even wore a mask covering their mouths that had the blend applied to it. The saving grace for the thieves, essential oil!

So what does that have to do with us non-plagued folks worrying about people of today? Well, testing & studies have shown that the essential oils in this blend can be helpful in protecting your state of wellbeing. So you get well & stay well.
