Conventional body lotion is mostly water held together with synthetic emulsifiers — effective at spreading, less effective at actually moisturizing. The difference with a shea butter-forward lotion is that the emollients are doing real work: penetrating the skin barrier, replacing the lipids that dry air and harsh cleansers strip out, and leaving hydration that lasts for hours rather than evaporating with the water content.
